With the upcoming Superbowl and NCAA nearby, we would like to remind the Upstate community that sports betting boards are considered gambling. Most gambling activities in New York state are illegal and should not be engaged in on state property. New York state allowable gambling activities does not include private gambling pools such as a Superbowl board or any other sport. This constitutes a violation of state law, as well as our code of conduct. Thank you for your anticipated cooperation.

Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion offers Black History Month events

The Upstate Office of Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will offer a series of events in celebration of Black History Month.

Student Success and Academic Excellence panel presentation. Feb. 12, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., 4414A Academic Building. The panel will feature Onondaga Community College President Warren Hilton, PhD; Syracuse City School Superintendent Anthony Davis and Executive Director of Say Yes to Education Syracuse Ahmeed Turner.
Virtual presentation Racial Bias in Health and AI from noon to 1 p.m., Feb. 13 with Lucila Ohno-Machado, MD, MBA, PhD, deputy dean of biomedical informatics and chair of biomedical informatics and data science. Information to join will be forthcoming.
A session on Structural Racism and Health is planned for 1 to 2 p.m., Feb. 22 in 2331 Weiskotten Hall, featuring Brittany Taylor, community impact director of the American Heart Association.
Recruitment and Retention of Diverse Personnel panel presentation from 10:30 a.m. to noon, Feb. 27 in 4414 Academic Building. Featured panelists are Davie Bey, managing principal at DKON Consulting; Jamie Lyn Perry, assistant professor of management at Syracuse University and Gwen Webber McLeod, president of Gwen Inc.

Also on tap for Black History Month is National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, to be held today, Feb. 7 from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Southwest Community Center, 401 South Ave., Syracuse; and the Black History Month Gala Feb. 24 from 6 to 10 p.m. at Crowne Plaza, 701 E. Genesee St., Syracuse.

Advocates to accept applications for grant funding in February

The Advocates for Upstate will accept applications for grant funding Feb. 1 to 29. All departments and programs affiliated with Upstate on all campuses are eligible to apply for funding to be used between June 1, 2024 and May 31, 2025. Advocates for Upstate’s mission is to improve patient care and satisfaction, support medical education and enhance community health. Items or services that can be funded through department budgets are not eligible for Advocates Grant Funding.
