Email retention and archives reminder

The default retention period for email at Upstate is six months, as documented in policy UW C-08. To keep emails for a longer period of time, items should be stored in the “Archive” folder of the email mailbox. Brightspace course emails sent in error

Brightspace course emails received between Dec. 31 and Jan. 2 were sent in error. The 2024 annual required courses will be assigned to staff mid-January. New Microsoft Teams client

IMT has begun the roll out of the new Microsoft Teams client. For details on how to enable and use the new client, visit: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/switch-to-the-new-microsoft-teams-2d4a0c96-fa52-43f8-a006-4bfbc62cf6c5. Any issues with Teams following the launch, open a Help Desk ticket using the Online Web Portal or call 315-464-4115. Upstate honors Dr King by examining health advocacy at Health Justice Conference Jan. 15

Upstate will celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day with its annual student-led Health Justice Conference Monday, Jan. 15 from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Academic Building, NAB 4414/BC. The theme for this year’s conference is “Health Advocacy through Education: Illuminating Pathways to Progress.”

Roselyn Tso, who directs the federal Indian Health Service, leads a list of nearly 20 invited speakers who will address a broad range of health advocacy efforts. A complete list of speakers is here. Pre-registration is preferred and can be done here, but registration is also available at the door. The conference is free and open to the public and includes complimentary breakfast and lunch.

Women’s Health Services to close Jan. 19

Women’s Health Services will close Friday, Jan. 19 to accommodate a location change to the third floor of Upstate Health Care Center, across from the Perinatal Center. The move will consolidate OB/GYN services to the third floor and double to Women’s Health Services clinical space to accommodate expanding volume. The clinic will reopen Jan. 22 in suite 3073. All phone and fax numbers remain the same.

Upstate Innovation Day will be held Jan. 23 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the CNY Biotech Accelerator Theater, 841 E. Fayette St., Syracuse. The Pharmaceutical, Biologic and Medical Device Research and Commercialization—including Upstate’s CNY Biotech Accelerator Medical Device Innovation Challenge (MDIC)—Pitch Event will offer a $5,000 pitch award. Author of the Doctors Blackwell to speak at Elizabeth Blackwell Day Feb. 7.

Janice P. Nimura, author of The Doctors Blackwell, will celebrate Elizabeth Blackwell Day at Upstate Medical University Wednesday, Feb. 7 at noon in the Ninth Floor Auditorium of Weiskotten Hall. The event is open to the public.

Nimura will discuss her book, The Doctors Blackwell, which tells of the tenacity and vision of sisters, Elizabeth and Emily, who became pioneering physicians. Elizabeth Blackwell earned her medical degree in 1849 from what is now Upstate Medical University becoming the first woman physician in the United States; Emily received her medical degree in 1854 from what is now Case Western Reserve University. The Doctors Blackwell was a New York Times bestseller and a finalist for the 2022 Pulitzer Prize in biography. This year, 2024, marks the 175 anniversary of Elizabeth Blackwell receiving her MD from what is now Upstate. Cosponsors of the Nimura’s visit are the student chapter of the American Women Medical Association and AMWA President Sabrina Sun and the Office of the President

The Informed Patient podcast recently featured interviews with these specialists about heart failure, a condition that can lead to heart failure and fibromyalgia.

• People with heart failure can find the special kind of care they require at the Upstate Heart Failure Clinic. Nurse practitioner Kristin Ramella and nurse Sarah Bobenhausen, who both work at the clinic, explain the needs of these patients.
• Describing cardiac amyloidosis, a condition that can lead to heart failure, is Cynthia Taub, MD, a cardiologist with a special interest in this condition. She is the chair of the medicine department.
• A disease that can manifest itself in many ways is fibromyalgia, and explaining how it is diagnosed and treated in Alex Hensel, MD, a resident physician in family medicine.
