Making Connections in Media and Medicine is April 11

Jon Frankel, a three-time Emmy award winning correspondent with a 30-year career in journalism, will be the guest speaker at Making Connections in Media and Medicine today, April 11 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Syracuse University National Veterans Resource Center. Jon Frankel is a three-time Emmy-award winning correspondent as a member of HBO’s Real sports with Bryant Gumbel. His career spans more than 30 years including local sports journalism and network news with NBC’s Today Show, ABC’s Good Morning America, World News and Nightline and CBS’ Early show. Many of Mr. Frankel’s stories intersect sports and public health such as his reporting on the gun industry, CTE and traumatic brain injuries in football, and the trials of skiing the World Cup’s daunting Hahnenkamm course. Jon was a correspondent on the acclaimed 2016 Real Sports expose on the International Olympic Committee that captured a duPont-Columbia University broadcast journalism award and the Sports Emmy for Outstanding Sports Journalism.

Donate Life Month events are April 11, 12, 15, 19

  • A Donate Life T-shirt sale will be held today, April 11 and 25 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. outside Café 750 on the second floor of Upstate University Hospital and in the cafeteria at Community. Shirts are $20 each. Sales support the Upstate Donor Fund which provides community education and outreach on organ donation.
  • Wear blue and green Friday, April 12 to support Donate Life Month, take a photo, and send to Michelle Lonkey at [email protected] by April 18. Photo contest prizes are available for first, second and third place.
  • Donations for the Donate Life virtual silent auction are due by April 15. Prizes will be awarded for the most creative, most lucrative, and best theme. Proceeds from the auction will be used to help promote organ donation and register new organ donors. NYS Thoracic Society conference is April 11 and 12

Upstate will host the NYS Thoracic Society annual conference April 11 from 7 a.m. to 5:15 p.m., and April 12 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., in the auditorium on the ninth floor of Weiskotten Hall. Check-in will be held in the atrium of Setnor. The conference will cover a broad range of topics relevant to the daily practice of pulmonary and critical care medicine. Cardiology Grand Rounds is April 12

Cardiology Grand Rounds will be held April 12 from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. via WebEx. Jorge Romero, MD, FHRS, FACC, director of arrhythmia and electrophysiology research at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, will present A Stormy Heart: Advances in the Management of Ventricular Electrical Storm. Romero is an invasive cardiac electrophysiologist with clinical and academic expertise in atrial fibrillation and complex ventricular arrhythmias catheter ablation. Upstate Concussion Center symposium is April 15 

The fifth annual Upstate Concussion Center symposium will be held Monday, April 15 from 4 to 7:30 p.m. at the Institute for Human Performance. Updated Guidelines for Managing Students and Athletes Following Concussion will teach best practices for assessing and managing students and athletes following injury using the most up-to-date consensus statement recommendations. Child Abuse and Referral Program hosts events are April 15, 16 and 17

The Child Abuse and Referral Program (CARE) will host the following events as part of Child Abuse Prevention Month. All events take place in the Performance Center on the 11th floor of Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital.

  • April 15 from noon to 1 p.m.—Vincent Calleo, MD, FACEP, FAA, will present THC in the Pediatric Population. Lunch will be provided to the first 40 registrants. Register by April 12 for in-person or the virtual option, here: https://lp.constantcontactpages.com/sv/nsh1NTJ.
  • April 15 from noon to 2 p.m.—Upstate Poison Center will provide educational materials on drug exposures and tools for prevention for healthcare and child welfare professionals.
  • April 16 and 17 from noon to 1 p.m.—Onondaga County Health Department will offer Narcan training. Experts will provide information on how to spot signs of an overdose and how to administer Narcan. Participants will receive a dose of Narcan to carry with them in the event of an overdose. A repeat of this session will be held April 16 from 1 to 2 p.m. and April 17 from noon to 2 p.m. on a walk-in basis.
  • April 16 and 17 from noon to 2 p.m.—Upstate Poison Center and Upstate Safe Kids will provide educational activities, handouts, and drug exposure prevention tools for healthcare professionals, parents, children, and adolescents. Free lock boxes will be available.

Schwartz Rounds is April 16

Schwartz Rounds will be held Tuesday, April 16 at noon in 8405 A/B, Upstate University Hospital. Panelists will share personal experiences as healthcare professionals who have been family members of patients. The discussion will include feelings of frustration, pain, and the expectations they had regarding the care provided. The discussion will offer a unique perspective from the other side of the hospital bed. Schwartz Rounds is open to staff of all departments and is intended to support staff by offering a compassionate listening environment. 1 CE hour is available for participants. Reiss Family Visiting Lecturer in Ethics and Equality events are April 18 and 19

Center for Bioethics and Humanities welcomes Ricardo Nuila, MD, associate professor of medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, as the 2024 Reiss Family Visiting Lecturer in Ethics and Equality for two events April 18 and 19. The event schedule and registration links are as follows:

Kick Butts Day is April 19

The Tobacco-Free Task Force will host Kick Butts Earth Day Friday, April 19 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. beginning in the lobby of Upstate Cancer Center and from 1 to 3 p.m. in the main lobby of Community. A 5K run/walk will be held April 20 from 9 to 11 a.m. at Long Branch Park. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. The event will benefit Empower Parkinson, Upstate’s 2024 Your Cause charity, and is organized by Upstate’s DPT class of 2025 service chairs. Suicide prevention training is May 10 and 20

Campus Connect: Suicide Prevention Training will be held May 10 and 20 from 9 a.m. to noon. in Setnor Hall. Seating is limited and registration is required.
